Arms lifted high have been an element of worship since the days of the Old Testament and are mentioned by Paul in the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:8. That gesture symbolizes a desire for relationship. Little children, around the world, without being taught do this action to have parents pick them up when they sense a need for intimacy. So it seemed fitting that people take this stance when seeking the Lord, His strength and His face.
